"You about to get whipped!" I yelled to Q as I tightened up the shoelaces on my New Balances. He shrugged his shoulders and gave me a look that said, "yea right." We were preparing to race down the street in his neighborhood like two teenagers. Although Q was quite the athlete in his high school and college days, I still thought I could beat him (because I'm confident like that).
1....2.....3...we said together and both took off. Within three seconds he was way ahead of me, but I increased my speed and was soon catching up to him, and then I passed him! Although I knew he had let me win, I still relished in my victory, throwing my hands in the air like Rocky. He laughed loudly, picked me up, throwing me over his shoulders and carried me all the way back to his house.
While I took a shower Q fixed dinner (yes he cooks too amazing right?) and I couldn't help but smile thinking about how much I liked this guy. Although his age still does bother me, I was starting to really not care. I changed into one of my favorite DST shirts and old Howard sweatpants and joined Q in the living room. He prepared Salmon and grilled veggies for dinner and I swear it tasted just like heaven. We laughed and talked about our race and his crazy neighbor who looked at us like we were insane. Before I knew it we were engrossed in a conversation about his past and then I did it...I asked him had he ever been married (a couple of friends suggested that I should given the age factor, I avoided it for awhile, but I was dying to know).
He got (uncomfortably) silent.
Me: (laughing nervously) it's ok you can tell me if you were
Him: No I've never been married, but I was engaged in my early twenties
Me: Oh...wow. Well..um..what happened?
Him: she cheated...with my best friend
Me: ::crickets:: (I didn't know what to say) eventually I managed to mouth a quiet "sorry"
Him: Look it was along time ago and I'm over it. Besides there's someone else I can see myself spending my future with.
Me: (laughing nervously again) Come on let's do the dishes.
He got up from his chair picking me up (he loves doing that, I guess because he's so tall) and gave me the sweetest kiss. However, something still told me there was more to his "engagement" story than he was letting on.
I didn't want to press the issue, but I sure can't get it off my mind.
